Anderson Cooper, news anchor for CNN, was awarded the 2018 Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism by the Cronkite School at Arizona State University on Wednesday morning in downtown Phoenix.

The event was held at the Sheraton Downtown Hotel, and is held annually to honor a nationally recognized journalist, with past recipients including Diane Sawyer, Tom Brokaw, and Bob Schieffer.

Cooper spoke about his initial reluctance to accept the Cronkite Award, due to his demands as the anchor of his eponymous program Anderson Cooper 360. But he was eventually able to fit it into his schedule, and broadcasted his nightly news show from the television studios at the Cronkite School.

Cooper also spoke about his meeting with Walter Cronkite, whom he interviewed for a news piece before the late anchor's passing.
