Congresswoman Martha McSally launched a bid for U.S. Senate on Friday, traveling across the state in a plane she piloted herself to make the announcement. The announcement tour started in her district, in Tucson, and continued to Phoenix and Prescott.
McSally had long been speculated to be a candidate for U.S. Senate, following the announcement by incumbent Senator Jeff Flake that he would not be seeking reelection.
McSally is seen as a safe choice by more traditional Republican party members, who have thus far refused to support McSally's primary opponents, former State Senator Kelli Ward and former Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Whoever wins the Republican primary will face off against U.S. Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema in the general election, which many political analysts have categorized as a tossup.
