Bill Moyers, former host of Bill Moyers Journal on PBS, appeared at Arizona State University on Wednesday evening, presenting those in attendance with a screening and discussion of his new documentary "Rikers: An American Prison."

Moyers sought to create a documentary that presents the stories of inmates who were previously held on Rikers Island in New York, and the hardships they experienced with violence from other inmates, correctional officers, and the mental anguish involved with living in solitary confinement, according to Moyers' documentary.

Kalief Browder, an inmate held at Rikers Island for three years, committed suicide while in custody waiting for trial when he was accused of stealing a backpack. Following a story in The New Yorker, Browder's experience on Rikers became "a symbol" of the "broken criminal justice system," according to the New York Times.

Moyers is traveling around the country, presenting the film before audiences, and leading a discussion about how to reform the criminal justice system, and the broken prison system in the United States.

Following the documentary, members of the audience were allowed to participate in a discussion and ask questions of a panel of experts, including Deputy Chief of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department Tracy Haggard, former U.S. Attorney Paul K. Charlton, Justice of the Peace Anna Huberman, and several others.
