Over the weekend, the 2016 Politicon occured at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, California. Billed as a non-partisan political event, that also calls itself the Comic-Con of politics, Politicon presented a wide variety of politicians, political consultants, celebrities, comedians, authors and commentators.
According to convention organizers, more than 8,000 people were in attendance for what was the convention's second annual event. The opening keynote was delivered by Governor Gary Johnson, the Libertarian nominee for President of the United States in the 2016 presidential election.
Also featured at the convention included the likes of Sarah Palin, James Carville, Ann Coulter, Van Jones, Bill Nye the Science Guy, Glenn Beck, Barbara Boxer, Larry Wilmore, Darrell Hammond, Melissa Harris-Perry, as well as comedians James Adomian and Anthony Atamanuik performing as Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump, respectively.
For a convention taking place near the liberal bastion of Los Angeles, the event was surprisingly respectful towards the conservative speakers, although more excitement was present for the liberal side of the convention. As an example, the debate between Cenk Uygur and Dinesh D'Souza featured a notably liberal audience.
Organizers of the event originally anticipated 3,000 attendees, but due to onsite registration the number ballooned throughout the weekend, featuring long lines for attendees in order to see their favorite political panels.
