Phoenix Comicon made its return this past weekend at the Phoenix Convention Center, with tens of thousands of fans of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, comic books, film, television, and novels, gathering to attend the 15th annual convention, and celebrate nerd culture.
Phoenix Comicon has grown considerably since its roots in the early 2000's, with big media guests attending the convention each year, it has grown to an annual attendance of around 75,000. Official figures for this year's offering have yet to be released.
This year, fans were graced with the presence of several dozen television and film stars, such as Sean Astin, Alex Kingston, Timothy Omundson, David Ramsey and Billie Piper, prolific authors such as Patrick Rothfuss, and of course hundreds upon hundreds of cosplayers dressed up as many different fan favorite characters.
Personally, this was my sixth time attending Phoenix Comicon, my first was in 2011, and the convention has considerably grown since then. Although it does not yet rival the high profile nature of that of its other southwest counterpart, San Diego Comic Con, Phoenix has become a top contender among the best of the best pop culture conventions around the country.
Other popular events at the convention included the expansive exhibitor floor, voice actor panels, a masquerade contest, an 18+ burlesque show, costume gatherings, youth programming, author signings, television discussions, science panels, and many other events that you would come to expect at a pop culture convention.
Phoenix Comicon has already confirmed its place at the Phoenix Convention Center through at least 2019, and they announced that their new addition, Phoenix Comicon Fan Fest, will be taking place at the Convention Center in October, slightly earlier than past years.
