Former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Rick Santorum spoke at Arizona Christian University on Thursday morning, largely to address the topics of faith, and a variety of subjects important to social conservatives, but he also took time to weigh in on the 2016 presidential race.
After delivering a 45 minute speech, Santorum opened the event to questions from the audience, with the first student asking if he would consider running again in 2020. Santorum shot down the idea, wanting to avoid the label of being a perennial candidate for office.
However, Santorum was also asked his thoughts on the 2016 presidential race, and gave faith to those in attendance, based largely on Republican nominee Donald Trump's picks for the Supreme Court, saying it is crucial that a Republican is elected as it may determine the balance of power for the next three decades.
Santorum was a favorite among social conservatives in 2012 presidential election where he came in 2nd to Mitt Romney, but didn't gain much traction in 2016, dropping out of the race soon after the Iowa caucuses.
