I've been attending WonderCon ever since it moved from northern California to southern California, where it's been since 2012. Every year it has always been in Anaheim, except this year. For reasons that I'm not sure of, the Comic-Con team brought WonderCon this year to the Los Angeles Convention Center, perhaps in a test of how the convention center would work if they ever move San Diego Comic-Con north.
With its move to Los Angeles, I expected there to be a large scale A-List celebrity presence, but this year was sort of low key. Similar to last year, there wasn't anything that particularly stood out for me as some years at WonderCon have, or anything remotely close to San Diego Comic-Con.
Granted, I decided to go the television route this year, attending all the panels in the second largest room, featuring panels for such shows as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Orphan Black, Preacher, and a variety of other noteworthy television shows known for their geek-ish fandom.
I was particularly pleased with the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. panel, as it most reminded me of a San Diego level panel, with all the top stars of the show in attendance. But the best part is that there is little to no wait involved in attending panels at WonderCon. This same panel at San Diego would definitely have required overnight camping in the Ballroom 20 line.
I also got to see a whole host of celebrities that I'd never been able to photograph before, something that I'm always glad to be able to say. M. Night Shyamalan for instance is someone who I've never photographed before, something that has become harder and harder to say as my convention attendance continues through the years.
With this year's WonderCon now in the books, I'm really looking forward to the next convention!
